Book Design Ideas

We've been messing around with a few ideas for the look of the book itself. Most of the inspiration came from the great cover designed by Aurore Damant. The font creation for the logo was designed by myself, and hopefully it all works! I felt the old logo didn't fit 100% with the quirky style of the cover. Quite often you find with design, you go back on yourself and tweak bits and pieces until you feel at least satisfied that there is cohesion and that general feeling of contentment. I'm not sure if this will be absolutely final, but I'm happy with it so far.

I'll probably re-arrange the blog a little to help people familiarize themselves with the new logo. (Two logos is not a good look..!)

Heather Dixon Strip

Here are a couple of pages from Heather Dixon's contribution. I thought this was definitely one of the strongest stories in the book so far. This is the World War II based story of Helmuth Hubener.

I know I said I'd post up one final page from each strip, without letters, but it doesn't give away too much. I thought it'd be a nice teaser!

Jarrett Young Colour Keys

Jarrett says:

"Here are about 4 of 10 color keys. Initially, I was taking complete artistic license with the colors. Then I realized (at least to my knowledge) there are no sprawling meadows in Africa. Chris Batten had suggested we stick with golden grass since that's what he wrote about (hah!) so I went that direction with things. In the end, he wound up liking the bottom right color key, and while I find it a little pastel, I have to admit it's very friendly. Also, we were going for a children's book feel.."

Check out more of Jarrett's work over at his blog.

Teaser: Product Two's Strip

Here's a page out of Product Two's Strip. It's a bit more abstract than some of our other contributions and there are some great little gags tucked away in the strip as a whole. The subtle banter between the two characters is great, so I'm sure you'll like this one once it's printed as a complete strip in our book! I only wish I could show you more...

'Paperboy' by El Tobe

Here's a page from El Tobe's contribution to the book. When I first put the book together, I was trying to assemble a team of artists that don't usually draw comics every day. This was in the hope that something a little unusual would happen. And I'm pleased to say it did...Can you believe this is El Tobe's first real attempt at using a comic style layout with his art work?

Quercus Stop Global Warming Animation

Take a look at this...It's not a part of our project, but I thought it to be very relevant. It's a great creative piece of work sending a very clear message about the importance of our actions as the dominant race in our world. It's very sad, but so good...

Director : FlavioMac. Post-Production : Seagulls Fly.

Cover Colours!

"Here is the colored version of the cover. Tell me if you like it. I used the logo from the blog for the title, but you can put anything you want, as long as it fit the composition. And I wrote a line of text, just to see how it could look like if you want to write something on the cover."

-Aurore

Thanks, this is great!! I might change the logo not sure yet. Looks amazing! Good job.

Initial Cover Illustration Sketch by Aurore Damant

'Here is an idea for the cover of your book. I hope the sketch isn't too rough, basically it's a happy businessman walking among others unhappy businessmen. I guess he went fed-up with his job and decided to live a better/crazier life symbolized by the paper-hat on his head. It's a kind of weird idea, tell me if you think it's funny or if you want something else. It might not fit the tone of the book, I don't know. You tell me.

Best,
Aurore.'

I love this, it's a really nice concept. I'm sure it'll help our little book fly off the shelves. Let's run with it. Thanks!
